About Mahindure

Mahindure – means “lava”, as in lava from the volcano. He was born just after the massive eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano in 2002 that engulfed the city of Goma forcing thousands to flee. Fatalities were low because the lava flowed slowly by the time it reached the town – but the effects of the eruption can be clearly seen in the city today.

Mahindure likes to play with Matembela, because they are almost the same age (born only 1 week apart). It is very easy to get close to Mahindure. He pounds his chest creating a tiny thumping sound, baring his teeth, as if he is a tough guy! And then he runs and hides behind a tree…
